Emily talks about her music: 'My songs are about the human condition - the human experience - the frailty of the heart - the tidal wave that is love. They are mainly, while not exclusively, based upon my own love's journey - at once heartbreaking and beautiful - an outlet for the sorting through of my emotions and a documentation of my story.'
How and when you started making music: 'I think the first 'song' I wrote was a piano instrumental when I was about seven. As the years went by, I would belt out little snippets of song wherever I was to amuse myself (J) and make up catchy little tunes to entertain my siblings and cousins on long car rides. I first started seriously writing at around 15-16 years old ‚ entranced at the thought I could make a living from it. Over the years Iíve played piano, flute, French horn, trumpet, some guitar ‚ even baritone horn for a while. I generally write using the piano ‚ occasionally the guitar - down in the studio my dad built me. It's really just plywood blocking off a corner of the basement, but we like to refer to it as 'The Studio.' There are millions of papers and notebooks with lyrics scribbled all over them, along with various instruments and recording equipment. It is my refuge.'
Major influences: 'The Beatles and Bob Dylan are HUGE influences in my life - they're thoroughly pervasive, actually - most chapters of my life coincide with one or another of their albums. The Beatles, especially, are simply inspiring and all-consuming... Joe Mitchell is a constant source of inspiration as well ‚ my true musical soulmate whose own songwriting elicits artistic masterpieces that are simply perfectÖ HOWEVER, I process everything I hear and keep most of it filed away and factored in, because inspiration - creation - beauty - comes in all keys...hehe - that's kind of corny sounding...but true :D'
What makes your music different? 'It draws on elements from all genres ‚ pop, classic rock, country, jazz, blues, classicalÖbut it also has a key, one-of-a-kind element: me. It is my voice ‚ my feelings.'
Key career highlights:
Demo produced by Sandy Linzer at Waterstreet Studios in Hoboken, NJ - January 2007
Studying voice, songwriting development, and overall 'grooming' with Angela Bacari - 2001-present
Studying jazz voice under Shawnn Monteiro - 2006-2008
Why is it important for you to connect with music fans and what do you have to offer them as an artist? 'It is SO important for me to connect with music fans. In writing songs, I give of my very heart and soul to the world. My hope is that the raw expression of my life's rollercoaster - 'crawl in a hole and die' one day, 'top of the world' the next ‚ may be embraced much like a compassionate, dear friend. My music is a place one can turn to for understanding and empathy ‚ the comfort of home and familiarity ‚ a soundtrack for one's life.'
